Simulation and testing of material extraction flow in a transfer hopper
2009

The objective of this project, undertaken in collaboration with the University of Oviedo, was the study of the discharge flow from a hopper of 43m in length through the use of a prototype on a scale of 1:10 and its experimental contrast with the objective of optimising the extraction flow for different materials and working conditions.

The work was divided into three phases:

  • PHASE 1: Test design, reproducing the geometry of the hopper and the different elements that could have an influence on the flow of material to a scale of 1:10; a list of materials and equipment needed and the administration for their acquisition and construction was also drawn up.
  • PHASE 2: Undertaking the tests of material flow using the 1:10 scale model of the hopper and the different mechanical elements that could have an influence.
  • PHASE 3: Numerical analysis of the flow and contrast with the experimental results, seeking to reproduce phenomenon that could cause different problems during operation, as is shown in the observations and available data.
